i had ragged years back between 1994 and 2000, expelled from home, moving around, fooling around, lousy relationship, somtimes living hand to mouth.i even left 'bound by the beauty' to some girl that i can hardly remember her name (along with some lang's CDs and that rolling stone issue), and had been missing 'hockey', 'valley' and 'everything reminds me of my dog' a lot for years.
all those years, thanks for songs of 'when i was a boy' to let me feel some sort of connection, while i was available to feel, to the simple, beautiful, intelligent, trusted, and worthy-to-fight-for world.
it's until the late 2000 that i finally found a stable stand, a trustful lover, had time and resource to reach out, and learnt my jane siberry had hold her own SHEEBA record, and had issued seven records since 1995, which i can't find any in taiwan. anyway, thanks to the internet that i could at least keep the latest information of this great performer, and to know there was even a "censored-hockey" ...
in 2002, good for FNAC, accepted my order for 'the jane siberry anthology'. in this 2 CD set, there are more touching songs both in her early and her post-mainstream career.
here i choose my favorite 6 songs from her earlys, which by my definition, is pre-bound-by-the-beauty years (1981~1987).
- in the blue night (from the debut, jane siberry)
- mimi on the beach (from the 2nd, no borders here), there's a clip found on youtube
some said this song had been an underground hit then, it's really a interesting song, i had my own vision of it without this video. jane wrote the 'mimi speaks' as the sequal to this "mimi get up, get up" thing during 1999, that's another worth-having one.
- you don't need (from the 2nd, no borders here), there's a full version video on youtube
i have a story for this song, years before, one of my friends who cannot understand english well came to me, and i was playing the anthology CD, once this 'you don't need' going, she asked me to replay it for several times, and cried over it. i was stunned that the emotion just in music and in voice, without understanding what was told, could be so powerful and penetrating. because i knew my friend was in a tough time with her lover, and the situation was just like the song described...
- the taxi ride (from the 3rd, the speckless sky), this one was in the end of the 2006 movie 'gymnast'
- the walking, and constantly (from the 4th, the walking)
- the lobby (from the 4th, the walking) , from this one, you could see she was not only singing but performing, she was not only a storyteller, but becoming a devoted artist...
